Researchers and the Media – Improving Relations (13.12.2007)
Nordic researchers are relatively satisfied with their cooperation with the media and the media coverage of their research field. A survey conducted by the European Commission concludes that “even though the majority of [European] researchers feel that the relation between scientists and the media is faced with complex challenges […] the relation seems to be regarded better than it is commonly understood to be”.
Scandinavian Research Collaboration on Ocean Energy (10.12.2007)
On 6 December 2007, the Norwegian enterprise Statkraft and three Scandinavian universities started a research collaboration programme within ocean energy. – The potential within ocean energy is extensive, and involves great opportunities both on national and international levels, says Torbjørn Digernes, rector at NTNU.

Nordic Research Collaboration in Wireless ICT (04.12.2007)
VINNOVA, TEKES and the Norwegian Research Council invest more than 75 Million SEK in Nordic cooperation within research on wireless communication systems. Joint Nordic ICT projects develop the mobile systems for the future, printed electronics, Radio-frequency identification (RFID) and smart homes.
Great Public Interest and Confidence in Science (30.11.2007)
A clear majority of Finns (63 %) are interested in science, research and technology, and approximately 70 % of the Swedes have strong confidence in science. These are some of the uplifting results expressed by the Finnish and Swedish science barometers, published in November 2007. Eurobarometers on science 2005 show similar results for the other Nordic countries.
Nordic-Russian Collaboration in Research: Workshop in St. Petersburg (28.11.2007)
11-13 November 2007 the workshop “NORIA meets Russia. Nordic and Russian cooperation in research and research training” was arranged in St. Petersburg. The seminar brought together 61 researchers, academics, and decision-makers from the Nordic countries and the Russian Federation.

Quality-Based Financing Model for Swedish Research (22.11.2007)
The allocation of financial resources to Swedish research institutions should be based on quality criteria. This is one of the main conclusions in a report suggesting a new financing model for the Swedish university sector. The report was presented to the Swedish minister for education and research in November 2007.
Academic Fraud in the Nordic Region: Professors Criticise New Swedish Model (21.11.2007)
In Denmark and Norway all accusations of academic fraud are processed by national bodies, external to the research institutions; while Sweden lacks an independent, national body to handle complaints regarding dishonesty in research. – The Swedish system is the poorest in the Nordic region, according to the professors Paul Hjemdahl (Karolinska Intitutet) and Povl Riis (Copenhagen University).

The pilot programme Nordic Research Schools in the Fields of the Humanities and the Social Sciences 2004–08 is already a great success. This is the conclusion of a midterm evaluation carried out by an external international expert panel in 2007.

From the North Pole to the Nobel Peace Prize (31.10.2007)
NordForsk and four other Nordic organisations organised a side event on climate change at the annual Session of the Nordic Council 29 October. Børge Ousland gave a lively eyewitness presentation based on several expeditions to the North Pole - and one to the South Pole. Two climate researchers, a professor in Economics, an Industry representative and The Norwegian Minister of Petroleum and Energy, Åslaug Haga all presented their view on climate change.The Nordic response to the climate challenge is the main theme of the Nordic Council Session in Oslo.

However, this would call for large grants.

Eurostars: 800 Million Euro for High-Tech SME Research (18.10.2007)
27 EUREKA-countries, including the five Nordic countries, have established Eurostars. “Eurostars brings a new level of cooperation and integration between Community and national research programmes,” Commissioner Potočnik said in a press release 2 October 2007. “It will boost R&D-performing SMEs and provides a powerful illustration of the European Research Area in action.”
Baltic Countries to Join Nordunet3 (16.10.2007)
The Nordunet3, the Internet programme, will be the first Nordic research programme to transformed into a Nordic/Baltic programme, the Nordic Council of Ministers decided at a meeting on 12 October. The joint Nordic/Baltic programme will commence on 1 January 2008.

Women in European Science: She Figures 2006 (21.09.2007)
Only 29 % of EU researchers are women. 28 – 39 % of researchers in the Nordic countries are female, while the Baltic States are in the lead in Europe with 43 - 53 % women in research. These are some of the main conclusions in the European Commission’s new report Women and Science – statistics and reports : She Figures 2006.

The Nordic countries present their culinary dimension in St. Petersburg 17-21 September 2007. The objective of the Nordic Food Week is to raise awareness of Nordic food and food culture in Russia and also emphasise the connection between food, health and wellbeing.
The Nils Klim Prize 2007: Carina Keskitalo, Umeå University (19.09.2007)
The Nils Klim Prize is awarded to a young Nordic researcher under 35 years who has made an outstanding contribution to research in the arts and humanities, social science, law or theology, either within one of these fields or through interdisciplinary work. This year Carina Keskitalo, Associate Professor at the Department of Political Science at Umeå University in Sweden, is awarded the prize.

Successful Call for Joint Nordic Use of Research Infrastructure (14.09.2007)
”We are very pleased to see such great interest among Nordic researchers for joint research infrastructure ventures”, NordForsk Director Liisa Hakamies-Blomqvist says. The NordForsk infrastructure call was launched as a new funding instrument 15 May 2007. Researchers in the Nordic countries have shown great interest in the programme; 54 applications are now being processed by NordForsk.
Few Foreign Science and Technology Employees in the Nordic Region (12.09.2007)
Non-nationals’ share of Human Resources in Science and Technology (HRST) is below the 2006 EU average of 6 % in all the Nordic countries. Sweden is closest with a share of 5,3 % non-nationals. Finland have the lowest share in the Nordic region: only 1,5 % of the HRST in Finland are non-national.
Invest in Energy Forests in Order to Fight Green House Effect (11.09.2007)
Energy forests are environmentally sound, non-fossil energy sources and make a renewable and clean alternative to oil. Fuels derived from biomass (like energy forests) are so called carbon neutral fuels. Now recent investigations, carried out by Nordic researchers, show that energy forests contribute considerably to the fight against climate change even before they are felled and used as bio-fuels: Energy forests are big eaters of carbon dioxide.

A recent report published by the Academy Finland reveals that Finnish researchers often feel that the research funding instruments available for international mobility do not meet their individual needs. Denmark and Sweden Collaborate with the US on Energy Research (22.08.2007)
The Danish Risø National Laboratory, Technical University of Denmark (DTU) has signed a collaboration agreement with the leading American research laboratory for renewable energy (NREL). In Sweden, the Minister for Enterprise, Energy and Communications, Maud Olofsson, has signed an agreement on energy research with the US.

In a cabinet meeting on 10 August 2007, Agder University College will achieve University status and become the seventh university in Norway. The decision will be effective from 1 September 2007.
Nordic researchers detect MS gene (14.08.2007)
A group of 15 Nordic researchers has detected a gene that can improve treatment of the nerve system disease Multiple Sclerosis (MS). The discovery gives researchers a broader understanding of the underlying mechanisms of MS and may contribute to the development of more efficient medication for MS patients.

Nordic stakes on genetic resources co-operation (07.08.2007)
A new Nordic institution, to be called Nordic Genetic Resource Centre (NordGen), will be set up in the New Year. At a ministerial meeting in Björneborg in Finland on 28 June the Nordic Ministers for Food, Agriculture and Fisheries adopted this recommendation to be made to the Nordic Ministers for Co-operation.
Studies Reveal Nordic Differences in Treatment of Sleep Apnea (06.08.2007)
Treatments of Obstructive Sleep Apnea Syndrome (OSAS) differ considerably between the Nordic countries, a survey carried out by the Nordic Health Technology Assessment (HTA) Centres reveals. The survey is based on OSAS studies from all the Nordic countries as well as documentation on the diagnosis criteria and the effects of treatment.

Public R&D investments in the social sciences are strong in Denmark, Norway, Sweden and Finland compared to the EU average; but “internal” differences between the Nordic countries are significant. New Functional Food based on marine raw materials (18.06.2007)
– We expect to detect new bioactive material in fish- and sea food components, professor Rolf Kristian Berge at the University of Bergen says. – If we do, our research will enable the food industry to develop new functional food products that can help prevent lifestyle diseases.
