Gunnel Gustafsson is appointed new director in NordForsk and will enter her new position 1 January 2010. Gustafsson leaves her position as Deputy Director General at the Swedish Research Council, and has been a member of the NordForsk Board since the institution was established in 2005. Her academic background is within the political sciences.

The time has come to guarantee even greater freedom of movement for people and companies in the Nordic Region. Barriers to cross-border freedom in the Region need to be removed so the Nordic example can serve as a model for partnerships in the rest of Europe, according to the programme for the Danish Presidency of the Nordic Council of Ministers 2010.

New President of the Nordic Council (04.11.2009)
Helgi Hjörvar MP (Iceland) was elected President of the Nordic Council at the annual Session in Stockholm last week. Hjörvar succeeds Sinikka Bohlin (Sweden) at the end of the year when it becomes the turn of Iceland to chair the Council.

The Nordic countries on top of research statistics (15.09.2009)
More than one quarter of the work force in Norway and Denmark consists of highly qualified professionals working with science and technology. This contributes to a top ranking on the European statistics, according to Eurostat. Norway leads the statistics on public support to research and education, followed by Iceland and the USA. The Norwegian Minister of Research and Higher Education, Tora Aasland, declares that this confirms a positive development.

NordForsks‘s annual report 2008 is now available. The publication presents our organisation and work during 2008. Major Nordic venture for research and innovation (15.06.2009)
On June 12th, participants in the Nordic Top-level Research Initiative took part in a kick-off seminar at the premises of Nordic Energy Research, Nordic Innovations Centre and NordForsk in Stensberggata 25 in Oslo. The seminar indicates the start of the Top-level Research Initiative.

Observing the stars at Tuorla Observatory (11.06.2009)
At the NordForsk sponsored Research Training Course at Tuorla Observatory, Turku University, Finland, 21 PhD students from 12 Nordic and Baltic countries are observing the stars. Around the clock activities combine daytime lectures with night-time observations, preparing the students for future collaboration within the field of astronomy.

Millennium Technology Prize 2010 – the nomination period has started (09.03.2009)
The Millennium Technology Prize is the biggest technology award in the world. With a value of more than one million euros, the award will be given for a technological innovation that improves the quality of life. The Technology Academy Foundation is now looking for nominees, and the nominations will be accepted until 1 October 2009.

New Chair of the NordForsk Board (25.02.2009)
Febrary 18th 2009 Professor Gudrun Nordal was appointed new Chair of the NordForsk Board. Nordal is a Professor at the Faculty of Philosophy, University of Iceland. In her new role she replaces Kari Kveseth, International Director of the Research Council of Norway, who remains a member of the Board. Riitta Mustonen, Vice President for Research at the Academy of Finland, was appointed Vice-Chair.

Iceland takes the Nordic helm in 2009 (08.01.2009)
Iceland assumed the Presidency of the Nordic Council of Ministers on 1 January 2009. The Presidency rotates between the five member states and an annual programme for co-operation is published. Iceland intends to focus on safety at sea in the North Atlantic and, in these times of crisis, on the Nordic welfare model.
