Climate-Change Effects Summer School

In this training course, Nordic research groups leading within one or more of the relevant fields offer a multidisciplinary research course aiming to stimulate participating students to take a broader view on climate-change effects research.

Research into climate-change effects on terrestrial ecosystems is a truly multidisciplinary research field, involving predictive modelling, correlative ecological approaches such as gradient studies and biogeography and palaeoecology, and field and laboratory experiments. Each of these research approaches is already making important contributions to our understanding of climate-change effects, but they have different strengths and weaknesses, and important steps forward can be made by closer multidisciplinary collaboration.

In this training course, Nordic research groups leading within one or more of the relevant fields offer a multidisciplinary research course aiming to stimulate participating students to take a broader view on climate-change effects research. This will be achieved through a series of seminars given by internationally leading experts in the different fields, group discussions exploring how multi- and inter-disciplinarity can contribute to address important themes in climate-change research, a field trip to the ITEX site at Finse, and practical training in statistical analyses using the R language.

The school is a unique opportunity to explore this important issue with like-minded post-graduate students and young scientists, mostly from the Nordic countries.

The overarching research question for the centre is whether these countries are able to reconcile economic effectiveness and social inequality.

This is the seventh research symposium organised by the Nordic Network for Interdisciplinary Environmental Studies (NIES) in partnership with selected research environments at the University of Oslo and the Norwegian University of Science and Technology (NTNU). Submissions are welcome from scholars based anywhere in the world, but are particularly encouraged from scholars in the Nordic countries.

The rise of environmental studies across different disciplines in the natural and social sciences, and more recently the humanities, is an acknowledgment that nature, as material and biological force, plays a larger and more fundamental role in human history and society than often previously acknowledged.

By addressing the dimensions of spatiality in human experience, environmental studies has the potential to go beyond the emphasis on externalities often signaled by the term “environment”, to arrive at new insights regarding how the environment helps us to reconceive or reinterpret what it means to be human.

At the same time, and despite what we might see as a deepening academic discourse in environmental studies, environmentalism both as a socio-cultural movement and as a set of policy options seems to have lost its forward momentum in the past 20-30 years. Schellenberger and Nordhaus’s provocative study “The Death of Environmentalism” (2005) calls into question both the scope and strategic merit of contemporary environmental discourse. As any problem of knowledge is also a problem of audience, there remains the question of how environmentalism might better construct, address, or include various publics, and to what extent, if at all, environmental studies in the academy can help facilitate that process.

Nordic Climate Change Adaptation Conference

Are societies sufficiently aware of and prepared for unprecedented changes due to climate change? This is a central question for the Second Nordic International Conference on Climate Change Adaptation.

This conference is a joint initiative between the two Nordic researcher networks Nordic climate change adaptation research network (NORDCLAD-Net) and NOrdic Network on Adaptive Management in relation to climate change (NONAM), operating under the Top-level Research Initiative's "Effect Studies and Adaptation to Climate Change"-programme. The local organisers are the Finnish Environment Institute and the Finnish Meteorological Institute.

Adaptation Research meets Adaptation Decision-Making

The Conference seeks to identify common ground between adaptation research and adaptation decision-making by comparing experiences, reporting new insights and revealing key gaps in knowledge. Some of the other questions being asked include:

Many countries have developed climate change adaptation strategies, but do decision-makers really have the appropriate information, expertise and tools available to them to implement adaptation decisions?

What adaptation research is underway and where is information currently lacking?

Is it more sensible to wait and see what happens, or to implement adaptation measures right away?

How should adaptation policies be targeted – where are they needed most and who should be responsible for implementing them?

Do the adaptation decisions of today need to be effective in 30 years time? In 100 years time?

What is the cost of climate change to the environment and society, how do we measure that cost and who foots the bill?
