Research Training Course: From bloom to gloom – Primary production, food-web processes and vertical flux in changing oceans

The course covers the main aspects involved in regulation of vertical flux in the ocean. These include production and aggregation of sinking particles, degradation and consumption of particles by bacteria and zooplankton, vertical distribution of particles and the effect of climate change on particle dynamics.

Time and place

:

Ólafsvik, Iceland 04.08.2011 to 14.08.2011

The course will give the students up-to-date information on particle fluxes, the processes regulating them, and the external factors (such as ocean acidification) involved, and trains the students in field and laboratory studies measuring sinking fluxes, particle dynamics and zooplankton production / degradation rates, and simple models simulating particle distributions.

Last date of application: 15.04.2011
