Countries all over the world are facing grand challenges of a global scale and, in the future, science will play an emerging role in society’s response to them. Accordingly, the agenda-setting, coordination and conduct of science, and the ways in which scientific knowledge is used, are key issues.
Future research policies increasingly take into account complex, interactive systems, the components of which have traditionally been managed separately: science for knowledge, science for society and science for competitiveness. A flexible and more strategic approach is needed where there is interaction between these three components, between national and EU efforts and between European and global efforts.
The Academy of Finland, NordForsk and The Nordic Network for International Research Policy Analysis (NIRPA) organise a joint seminar focusing on the following:
- How should research policies for the grand challenges be created, prioritised, managed and evaluated at national level?
- How to identify the relevant actors in different phases?
- How to identify the tools needed?
- Is there Nordic added value in joint efforts?
