Preparing the Nordic countries for climate change

Nobel laureate to address the inauguration of a Nordic Centre of Excellence on Adaptation Research.

Time and place

:

Norrköping Visualization Center 24.05.2011 from 14:30 to 16:30

Nine prominent research institutes in the five Nordic countries join forces to prepare the Nordic Countries for the dual challenge of a changing climate and the unintended consequences of climate change politics. The Centre of Excellence is called NORD-STAR, which is short for Nordic Strategic Adaptation Research. The Centre is funded by the Top-level Research Initiative.

The Centre will be inaugurated on May 24. The fact that Dr. Rajendra Pachauri, the Chairman of the IPCC, will address the opening illustrates the centre’s importance. The Nobel Prize Laureate emphasises how timely and innovative this new endeavour will become.

Operating under the slogan “NORD-STAR – guiding adaptation”, the centre focuses on two developments critical to both climate impacts and climate policy: land-use change and energy transitions. State-of-the-art climate visualisation techniques and policy-analysis tools will raise the adaptive capacity of for example cities and businesses.

The opening of the Centre will take place on May 24th at 14.30 at the Norrköping Visualization Center. The opening will be moderated by Jens Ergon, science journalist for the Swedish national broadcaster SVT, and will display examples of climate visualization in the dome.

Media is welcome to attend. Picture material can be provided.
