NIFU (Norwegian Institute for Studies in Research and Higher Education) reports that the number of doctoral degrees in Norway is increasing.

During the first half of 2002, 422 doctoral candidates presented themselves in Norway, 55 more than during the same period last year. In addition, this is 29 more than during the same period in reckord breaking year 1999. Based on this information, NIFU estimates the number of doctoral degrees this year to exceed 700 for the first time.

The increase is due to, among other things, more doctoral students in technology. The number of women receiving doctoral degrees is increasing too. During the first six months of 2002, 37,5 percent of the candidates were women. In technology, however, only every 7th candidate is a woman.
