The call for applications to the Nordic Centres of Excellence programme has now been closed. The programme secretariat at the Academy of Finland received 18 applications.

A maximum of ten units will be shortlisted in June by a panel of experts, who will visit the units going through to the second round in September. The final decision of the 3-4 successful candidates will be made in October 2002.

Most of the candidates filing applications consist of major research networks. It was in fact specifically required that applicants constitute a tight-knit, well organised network of existing research teams or units from at least three Nordic countries, making available their research equipment and infrastructure to other Nordic researchers as well.

The Nordic research councils for natural science, environmental science and engineering as well as the Nordic Council of Ministers launched the programme with a view to raising the quality standards of Nordic research and to giving it greater international visibility. The programme is due to run from 2002 through to 2007, with annual funding amounting to at least DKK 10 million, or some EUR 1.35 million.
