The rector of Åbo Academy in Finland, Gustav Björkstrand, has been appointed by the Nordic Council of Ministers and the Nordic Ministers of Education (MR-U) to chair a working group writing a white book on a Nordic research area.

The white book will establish guidelines for a common Nordic research area and the Nordic countries as an internationally leading research and innovation region. The reference group includes experts from all Nordic countries.

- I am convinced that a co-operation strategy is needed in order to secure the Nordic countries as a leading region in research. Our prosperity depends on this, says Björkstrand to Åbo Academy bulletin Meddelanden.

One of the central ideas of the EU‘s Sixth Frame Programme for research and innovation is a European Research Area (ERA). The Nordic countries have the possibility of creating a integrated research area of its own, NRA, where national funding is used on a Nordic basis, for instance through graduate schools. The white book will be handed in by end November this year.
