European Research Council established

European Research Council (ERC) has been established, and two support schemes have been launched: Starting Grants and Advanced Grants. "With the ERC, we are moving into a new era of European support to scientific research" says European Science and Research Commissioner, Janez Potočnik.
"Some of the greatest scientific discoveries and advances in knowledge have come from giving great ideas the space and time to flourish. This is what we want to achieve with the ERC," Potočnik says.

The two grant schemes Starting Grants and Advanced Grants will be the core activity for ERC during the EU‘s 7th framework programme (2007-2013). Both will be based on a bottom-up model, and are open for applications from all scientific areas.

The idea behind the Starting Grants is to lend a helping hand to young and promosing researchers on their way to establish themselves as independent researchers. This will be a way of preventing young talents from seeking engagements outside of academia, or going to research environments outside of Europe. The grants will be of 100.000 Euro and 400.000 Euro per year for up to ive years. ERC reckons it will grant approximately 200 scholarships per year. The first call is now open, and the deadline is April 25th 2007.

The target group for the Advanced Grants is established top researchers of all nationalities, working in Europe or moving to the area. The first call will open in the autumn of 2007.
