Extensive external funding of research in Sweden

The Annual of the Swedish National Agency for Higher Education reads that Sweden has been the subject to substantial changes in funding of research and research education. In 2001, external funding rose to 54 per cent of the research income at the institutions.

In the 1980‘s 2/3 of research and research education was funded by the faculties and other state institutions. In 2001, this had been reduced to 46 per cent. Even so, the main part of the funding still is provided by state institutions, in particular if one includes funding from other research institutions and the EU.
