Twice as many lecturers and researchers will reach retirement in 2001-2005 compared to the situation 10 years ago. In the period 2006-2010 the number will double again. The number of 20 to 24-year-olds increases dramatically in the same period. Numbers show that 52 per cent of Sweden‘s professors are older than 55 and many of these work in social sciences or the humanities.

Colleges and universities will thus be in great need of educated researchers in the years ahead. Nevertheless, the number of research students has stagnated.
