Finland ranks among top countries in publications and citations

The number of Finnish scientific publications in internationally esteemed journals has had a sharp increase during the past 20 years. In 2005 Finland had 8300 publications of this type. The growth is of several percent each year.
This is the case according to new numbers from the Academy of Finland. Compared to the number of inhabitants and the GDP Finland is world-leading in scientific publications, and are ahead of countries like UK and Germany. Finland is ranked fourth among 30 OECD countries.

43 percent of Finnish publications are within the natural sciences, and 39 percent are within medicine. The proportion of medical articles is larger in Finland than in other OECD countries.

Many of the articles are the result of international collaboration. Large collaboration partners for Finnish researchers are USA, Sweden, UK, Germany, France, the Netherlands and Russia. Universities are involved in almost 70 percent of all Finnish scientific publications.
