Global challenges - Nordic opportunities

26.03.2008
Nordic Prime Ministers to meet in Riksgränsen, 8-9 April. What is required in order to maintain Nordic competitiveness? How can we make ourselves more visible and make the Region even more attractive to overseas collaboration partners?
Prominent Nordic and International Participants
These are just some of the items that will be on the agenda when the Secretary General of the Nordic Council of Ministers, Halldór Ásgrímsson, meets the Prime Minister of Sweden, Fredrik Reinfeldt, and his Nordic counterparts on 8-9 April 2008 to discuss the challenges posed by globalisation.

Also taking part will be the five Ministers for Nordic Co-operation and representatives of the Nordic Council, the autonomous territories, business, industry, the education, training and research sectors, NGOs and civil servants in the Nordic region.

Keynote international speakers are: Professor Jagdish N. Bhagwati of Columbia University; Quentin Peel, editorial writer for the Financial Times; and André Sapir of the Free University in Brussels.

Annual Globalisation Forum
At their 2007 summer meeting in the forests of Finland, the Prime Ministers agreed to make globalisation the top priority for Nordic co-operation.

The climate, the environment and energy, research, education, training and innovation, obstacles to cross-border freedom of movement, and raising the profile of the Nordic countries were all identified as areas of particular importance. The Prime Ministers also made it part of the remit of the country holding the Presidency of the Nordic Council of Ministers to organise a globalisation forum.

The meeting in Riksgränsen is the first such globalisation forum to be held under Nordic auspices, and is planned to be an annual event.

The purpose of the meeting, to be held in Riksgränsen North Sweden, under the heading "A Competitive Nordic Region in a Globalised World", is to inspire and stimulate discussion among stakeholders in the North of Europe about the opportunities and challenges posed by globalisation.

The Prime Minister of Sweden, Fredrik Reinfeldt, will host the 2008 meeting as part of the Swedish Presidency of the Council of Ministers this year.
