HRH Crown Prince Haakon will open the conference on Tuesday 8 June. The Norwegian Minister of Research and Higher Education, Tora Aasland, and Arvid Hallén, Director of the host institution for the conference, the Research Council of Norway, will also participate at the opening.

This is the first time that researchers from the 160 Polar Year projects meet to exchange results after the fieldwork was terminated last year. Much of the research was aimed at the rapid climatic changes in the Polar Regions and the global impact of these.

Among the plenary speakers, we find some of the world‘s foremost climate and polar scientists. In addition to the program in Lillestrøm, several research vessels will be moored quayside in Oslo on these days, cinemas will be showing films from the Polar Year throughout the week, and a fair will be arranged in the conference area where a number of institutions will have stands.

NordForsk and the Top-level Research Initiative is present at the conference with our stand, and we also invite all interested conference participants to a meeting on June 10th 16:00 where the new Nordic Centres of Excellence within the sub-programme “Interaction between climate change and the cryosphere” will be announced. Norway‘s Minster of Foreign Affairs, Jonas Gahr Støre, will formally bring the conference to a close on Saturday, 12th June.

All plenery sessions and some other parts of the conference will be available as webcasts on a range of platforms. Read more about the conference here!
