Joint Nordic Initiative: Excellence in Research on Globalisation

Education, training and research activities account for over a quarter of the Nordic Council of Ministers‘ total budget of approximately DKK 850 million. In the light of the decision by the Nordic Prime Ministers to prioritise facing up to the challenges posed by globalisation, it is a sector unlikely to become any less important in the future , as a result of which the Council of Ministers has set up an excellence in research project. NordForsk will act as Secretariat to the group in close co-operation with the Nordic Innovation Centre and Nordic Energy Research. (18.01.2008)
Joint Nordic Initiative: Excellence in Research on Globalisation
Representatives of the Council of Ministers were joined by the managers of three Nordic institutions, Director Liisa Hakamies-Blomqvist of NordForsk, Director Kjetil Storvik of the Nordic Innovation Centre, NICe, and Director Birte Holst Jørgensen of Nordic Energy Research, NEF, for the first project meeting in January.

The Secretary General of the Council of Ministers, Halldór Asgrimsson, stressed that the excellence in research project is of particular significance as part of ongoing efforts to come up with a Nordic response to the challenges posed by globalisation. It is of the utmost importance that more is done to promote excellence in research and to make a better job of co-ordinating those efforts.

The steering group for the project is chaired by Lenau Gustafsson, deputy general director of Vinnova, Sweden. Professor Peter Lund of Helsinki University of Technology has been appointed project manager. The group is scheduled to submit a provisional draft programme to the Council of Ministers in late March, which will be discussed by the appropriate Councils of Ministers and their committees of senior officials in April, before a definitive proposal is submitted to the Ministers for Nordic Co-operation in June.
