Markku Mattila new Director General for Academy of Finland

Doctor of technology Markku Mattila is the new Director General of the Academy of Finland from 1st March 2007, when the contract of current Director General Raimo Väyrynen comes to an end. Mattila is offered a five-year contract.
Markku Mattila (b. 1945) has been a professor in safety techonology and the rector of the University of Tampere, as well as chair of the Adacemy‘s research area within biosciences and environment, and a member of the Academy Board. Mattila was also the chair and member of several working groups within university policy. He is now the Director of the Finnish Ministry of Education‘s research and education policy department.

There were nine candidates for the position, of which one application was withdrawn.
