Minister protests against alleged misuse of academic titles

Norwegian Minister of Education Øystein Djupedal warns Norwegian professors against using their titles actively in the public debates. When professors participate in the debate as normal citizens they should refrain from using their professor title, Djupedal says.
"When an expert participate in the public debate as a normal citizen, they should not use their titles or refer to a particular scientific competence," Djupedal says as an answer to a question posed in the Norwegian parliament. He thinks researchers that are not specialists in the area in question should refrain from linking their name and title in the debate.

However, the minister praises the involvement of the researchers: "For researchers, part of their work performance is to contribute to the public debate," Djupedal says.
