The Nordic ministers of education and research met in Copenhagen on 5th of April to discuss Nordic co-operation in education and research.

The Mininsters approved the guiding lines of a coming proposal for the Council of Ministers regarding Nordic mobility and grants for education and research. The draft of the proposal will be processed in the next ministers‘ meeting in June and will be handed over to the Nordic Council in October.

The Ministers were optimistic about the role of universities and colleges in regional development. The Norwegian Minister of research and education, Ms Kristin Clemet, outlined the new Norwegian reform in higher education, in which co-operation with the industry is emphasised.

Several ministers also mentioned the so called third purpose of the universities. In addition to teaching and research, the universities should be able to communicate with society at large.
