New programme for Nordic Centres of Excellence

27.08.2004
The Joint Committee for Nordic Research Councils for the Humanities and the Social Sciences (NOS-HS) is launching a Nordic Centre of Excellence Programme with the objective of further increasing the scientific quality and international strength of Nordic research.
The Programme will run during 2005-2010 and two to four NCoEs will be funded at an annual average level of between EUR 300,000 and EUR 500,000. The competition is open to research groups in the Nordic countries, who are conducting basic research in any field of the humanities and the social sciences. The topics and themes to be included in the programme are selected through a two-stage application procedure. The candidates for the final stage will be selected from fields in which the Nordic countries are already strong, and in which an NCoE network can clearly be anticipated further to enhance the quality, potential and international visibility of the research.

An NCoE is a compact and well-managed network of research teams and individual researchers from at least three Nordic countries, forming a virtual ‘centre’ with common objectives. The participating research units should be of a high or excellent scientific standard. The proposed NCoE must have the potential to establish itself as a leading, global-level research network.

The deadline for the submission of Pre-Proposals is 1 November 2004. More detailed information on the NCoE Programme, the schedule and the criteria for evaluation and selection of the NCoEs can be found at the web site of NOS-HS
