From 1st July the Nordic volcanological institute and the geoscientific department of University of Iceland will form the Institute of geosciences at the University of Iceland.
The Nordic Council of Ministers, the University of Iceland and the Icelandic Ministry of Education have now signed an agreement stating that from 1st July the Nordic volcanological institute (Nordvulk) and the geoscientific department of University of Iceland will form the Institute of geosciences at the University of Iceland.

Nordvulk is an institute within the Nordic Council of Ministers. The reogranisation is hoped to further strengthen the activities, says Icelandic newpaper Morgunblaðið. The institute will move into the recently constructed building of the Institute of natural sciences, Askja, which means an improvement of the research facilities. In addition, this makes is easier for scientists from different fields to co-operate.

The Icelandic minister of education, Þorgerður Katrín Gunnarsdóttir, has high hopes for the reorganisation. She states that the Ministry will support the establishment of the new institute by funding the day to day costs, buildings and equipment.
