Norwegian scientist awarded prestigious European award

What‘s the best way to explain deep sea ecosystems? Researcher Odd Aksel Bergstad knows how. Wednesday 7 March he was awarded the European Union’s Descartes Prize for Science Communication.
As the leader of the international research project MAR-ECO, Bergstad received first price within the category for innovative research communication. The MAR-ECO project is a network of scientists, students and dissemination associates which aims to popularise international scientific investigation at sea. A series of communication activities have been carried out, including TV documentaries, art exhibitions and webcasts.

In total, 33 European projects were nominated for the prize and among these five winners were selected. The €50,000 prize was handed out on 7 March 2007 at an award ceremony in Brussels. The aim of the prize is to stimulate public interest in science, and to reward key initiatives in that field.
