In 2001 1203 candidates received their doctoral degrees in Finland. Of these, 44,5 percent were women, compared to 33 percent in the early 1990s.

The augmentation in number of doctoral degrees this last decade can be observed in all the Nordic countries. On average, the number of candidates was increased by 10 percent yearly in Finland, 9 percent yearly in Denmark and Sweden and 7 percent yearly in Norway during the 1990s.
