Östros believes in co-ordination of resources
When Swedish Minister of education and research Thomas Östros presented the white paper on a Nordic research region to the Nordic Council of ministers on 30 October, he stressed that he believes in the future of the Nordic countries as a leading research region, but that competition from f. ex. USA, Japan and China is tough.
Östros underlines the need for co-operation in the Nordic region to obtain the critical mass that bigger countries have. He mentioned graduate schools and centres of excellence as means to increase the quality of Nordic research.
Östros wants more money for nordic research co-operation, and mentioned 500-600 million DKK as a possibility by combining the Nordic resources.
-An intensive Nordic research co-operation of high quality and great influence from researchers themselves will contribute to enhance Nordic research internationally, and will also strengthen the countries role as leading research nations, Östros said.
