Polar Year launch

International Polar Year 2007-2008 will be launched in Paris on 1st March. In addition, there will be events in all Nordic countries. Popular science lectures, cultural events, royal highnesses and ice hotels are among the ingredients.
In Denmark, Crown Prince Frederik will attend the opening event, whivh is a result of a cooperation between Denmark, Greenland, the Faroe Islands and Iceland. There will even be extra funding for Danish participation in the Polar Year: "The Government has decided to increase the funding for Danish participation in the International Polar Year. The existing funding will be increased five fold from 16 million DKK to 76 million DKK over the coming two years," says Danish Minister of Science Helge Sander. This is added to the 40 million DKK granted for arctic research in the national budget.

Sweden launches the Polar Year in the ice hotel in Jukkasjärvi, whereas in Norway there is a cooperation between Oslo, Svalbard and Tromsø to organise opening events.

This is the fourth International Polar Year, the last one was 50 years ago. More than 170 research projects involve more than 1000 researchers in over 60 countries. Read more at IPY‘s webpages.
