Political objectives for Norway‘s presidency

On a press conference in Oslo on 14th January four Norwegian minsters explained which political objectives will be in focus during the Norwegian presidency of the Nordic Council of Ministers this year.
On a press conference in Oslo on 14th January four Norwegian minsters explained which political objectives will be in focus during the Norwegian presidency of the Nordic Council of Ministers this year.

The ministers Svein Ludvigsen, Laila Dåvøy, Lars Sponheim and Børge Brende presented their political objectives behind the main areas of focus: Children and youth, Safe food and Sustainable development.

Svein Ludvigsen, Minister of Fisheries and Nordic Co-operation
The Norwegian presidency of the Nordic Council of Ministers will be aimed at the future, Mr Ludvigsen says. Children and youth will be in focus, as will the situation of the children in the adjacent areas. The minister also wished to explore the possible expansion of Nordic co-operation to the West-Nordic areas of Canada, Shetland, Orkney Islands and Hebrides.

Laila Dåvøy, Minister of Children and Family Affairs
Increased influence for children and youth in the Nordic countries and a common fight against neonazism and racial prejudice will be important themes during the Norwegian presidency. The minister states that children and youth should be given the opportunity to share their views in official hearings. Also, the co-operation across sectors should be strengthened. Children in the adjacent areas also have the right to a good health service system, the minister says. In addition, a closer co-operation between Norden and the adjacent areas is vital to stop the trade of women and children.

Lars Sponheim, Minister of Agriculture
The Nordic countries share the same interests in the process of producing safe food. These interests should be co-ordinated in order to obtain greater influence internationally.

Børge Brende, Minister of Environment
Global partership is important to limit the quantities of industrial waste, the Minister of Environment says. The countries involved commit to certain actions, and sanctions should be a more frequently used reaction if the countries fail to commit. The Nordic countries is an important area when united in its views. The Minister of Environment also mentioned ocean environment and biological diversity as important themes for the Norwegian presidency.
