Potocnik new Commissioner for Research

The Slovenian economist Janez Potočnik was announced as the new Commissioner for Research when José Barroso presented his team of commissioners recently.
Potočnik, who from November 1 will carry the full title Commissioner for Science and Research, comes from the position as Minister for European Affairs in the Slovenian government. He headed up the team that negotiated Slovenia’s accession to the EU, and is a highly respected figure in Slovenian politics. Potočnik holds a PhD in economics, and spent five years as a senior researcher at the Institute for Economic Research in Ljubljana. In addition to this, Potočnik has an excellent reputation as a leader, and is described as friendly, communicative and a hard worker.

The President-designate of the European Commission, announced recently his future team of commissioners. They will take office November 1 after Parliament approval.
