Record-breaking numbers of PhDs in Norway

28.02.2006
New numbers from NIFU STEP show that 2005 became a record-breaking year for Norway regarding doctoral degrees. 855 doctoral candidates graduated from Norwegian universities. Female candidates made up 40 percent of the total number of candidates.
The result of 855 candidates is 9 percent more than in 2004. The increase in numbers is due almost exclusively to the University of Oslo and NTNU, the University of Oslo being responsible for 37 percent of all Norwegian doctoral degrees in 2005. The increase was great particularly in the fields of medicine and natural sciences. The PhD degree has almost completely taken over and after 2008 only the dr. philos. degree will be kept in addition to PhD.
