Scandinavian Research Collaboration on Ocean Energy

On 6 December 2007, the Norwegian enterprise Statkraft and three Scandinavian universities started a research collaboration programme within ocean energy. – The potential within ocean energy is extensive, and involves great opportunities both on national and international levels, says Torbjørn Digernes, rector at NTNU.

The three universities involved are the Norwegian University of Science and Technology: NTNU, Uppsala University and the Technical University of Denmark: DTU. The collaboration network will comprise at least 10 PhD students, 3 research positions and one professoriate in ocean energy, the first of which will be established at NTNU.

The collaboration involves research on offshore wind power, wave power and tidal power. The new research programme ensures coordinated Scandinavian effort and aims to contribute to the development of mature, profitable and environmentally sustainable technologies within ocean energy.

– We strongly believe that ocean energy is part of the solution to the climatic challenge, and we aim to be in the lead in this field, Executive Vice president in Statkraft, Siri Halten, says.

Statkraft contributes with NOK 80 millions during the first four years of the programme. The universities will bring in the same amount altogether.
