Support for Belarusian exile university in Vilnius

The Nordic Council of Ministers is looking into a possible support for a Belarusian exile university in Vilnius as a contribution to the democratisation process of Belarus.
The European Humanities University (EHU) was opened in Belarus 12 years ago only to be closed by the authorities in 2004. The univeristy then moved from Minsk to Vilnius in Lithuania.

The Nordic Council of Ministers‘ Secretary General Per Unckel visited Vilnius earlier this summer, where he among others met with the Lithuanian Minister of Foreign Affairs, Antanas Valionis. One of the questions on the agenda was a possible support for the Belarusian university in exile.

The Nordic Ministers of Cooperation have discussed the possibility of supporting the EHU, in particular through an extensive project under the EU programme European Initiative for Democracy and Human Rights (EIDHR). The Nordic participation would be a partial financing of this programme. An application is expected to be handed to the EU Commission in the beginning of October. The project in question consists of a three-year education programme for 350 Belarusian students in Vilnius, i.e. five BA programmes and 5 MA programmes.
