The EU should move towards a Nordic model

"We cannot compete on lower wages. We cannot - and should not - compete on lower welfare services because they are of such great value. It would also be extremely short-sighted to compete by paying less heed to the environment. As a result, we have to invest in knowledge and move in the direction of the Nordic social model."
The EU Commissioner for Research, Janez Potocnik, made the opening address at the conference "Commmunicating European Research" in Brussels on 14 November.

One of the Union‘s main objectives is to increase research funding in the period up to 2010 until it reaches 3% of GDP but the Commissioner thinks Europe needs a "positive shock" by significantly increasing the money available for research and development.
