The time is ripe for a more systematic Nordic policy in an EU context, especially within research and innovation, Director of the Nordic Council, Jan-Erik Enestam, wrote in a contribution to the newspapers Svenska Dagbladet and Hufvudstadsbladet 25 January 2008.

Enestam reminded his readers that the bigger the family the more difficult it is to make decisions that satisfy everybody. The smaller member states in particular sometimes find it difficult to make their voices heard.

"This also makes it only natural to form alliances and partnerships. Following the same logic, a more systematic Nordic policy in an EU context can be advocated."

The Nordic Region already co-ordinates its policies on certain issues in an EU context, especially in the environment sector. EU issues are dealt with at meetings of the Nordic environment ministers, which are usually held just before meetings of the EU ministers.

"A similar model could also be applied to other sectors, especially in research and innovation, where we have already made huge progress," he writes.
