University merger in Iceland?

27.04.2006
A committee established by the Icelandic Ministry of Education wants to merge the University of Iceland and the Iceland University of Education. If effecutated, this merger will probably take place in 2008.
The committee says the merger will make it possible to reorganise all courses in pegagogy and education sciences, including teacher training. This will enable a more diverse and flexible selection of courses.

Minister of education, Thorgerdur Katrín Gunnarsdóttir, says a merger will increase the University of Iceland‘s chances of becoming one of the 100 best universities of the world, a goal recently pronounced by rector Kristín Ingólfsdóttir.

The proposal will now be sent out for comments.
