Nordnet - Transnational Tendencies and Nordic School Development
Many question the Nordic welfare model's prospects at a time of internationalisation and globalisation. How then is the situation in education, a central area of the welfare state? Is national diversity being blurred by transnational trends in educational policy (PISA, OECD recommendations, the Bologna process etc.), or is a new Nordic approach to education emerging?
Education research needs to create synergy between existing research on the development of Nordic national education in relation to transnational trends. We need systematic comparisons with focus on the practice of schools - comparisons that not only focus on the levels of politics, but on changes in the daily work of schools. There is also a need to bridge traditional Nordic/national boundaries and boundaries between preschool, basic school, youth education and continuous education.
The aim of this network is to explore these areas by creating synergy between groups of Nordic educational researchers dealing with the development of schools in relation to the new forms of educational government (NPM, tests/ranking, accountability) being experienced across the region. The network explorer similarities and differences between the Nordic countries and comparer the Nordic developments to global trends.
The network addresses how transnational trends are “translated”, interpreted, negotiated and handled in the practice of schooling, from Kindergarten to University level, and looks into the consequences for students, teachers and school leadership. Special attention is paid to the question of democracy.
