Synopsis

Precision medicine has the potential to dramatically change clinical focus and improve early diagnoses, prevent disease, and increase the efficacy and safety of patient treatment. However, an extensive research effort is needed to unravel the links between individual variability in genes, environment, and lifestyle before these treatments can be implemented in healthcare day-to-day. The disease and population registers in the Nordic countries are unique because of their detailed curation, depth of information, longitudinal nature, and ease of linkage to other databases. Biomedical and genetic data suitable for precision medicine research are stored in the Nordic biobanks and linked to disease registers which contain unparalleled longitudinal data on disease risk factors, etiological factors, drug prescriptions, medical therapies, and disease outcomes. Together, these extraordinary resources are a goldmine for population-based research and give the Nordic countries a unique chance to become a front-runner in the emerging precision medicine field. The session will address how the Nordic registers are used in research, and shed light on how Nordic research councils and policymakers work together to promote cross-border cooperation. The potential of this research asset will be discussed in terms of international research cooperation and global societal impact.
