NNSP Capacity Building Networks
These six topical networks are connecting research communities across the Nordic region to build critical mass in specialised fields and areas. Regular meetings and joint training activities in the networks will increase Nordic collaboration, and this will strengthen the impact of Nordic research in the international neutron scattering community.
Soft and biological materials
Neutron scattering methods provide unique information on the structure and dynamics of soft matter and biological systems, e.g. novel polymer systems, colloids, complex fluids, membranes, biological macromolecules, proteins, and drug-delivery systems. This network will build on already existing initiatives within the soft matter community to ensure continued expansion of the user base.

There is extensive knowledge in crystallography, dynamics, and structure-property relations in functional materials in the Nordic region. Examples include batteries, hydrogen-storage systems, fuel cells, catalysis and solar cells. Collaboration is already taking place between some research groups, but no network currently exists that can serve as a platform for scientific exchange. Such a network would be very beneficial to scientists in the region.

Magnetism and superconductivity
In the area of magnetism and superconductivity there is a great deal of activity taking place in the Nordic/Baltic countries, e.g. novel ferro-magnets, magnetic nano-particles, magnetic cooling, quantum effects in magnetism, multi-ferroic materials, and high-temperature superconductors. The level of national expertise in this field varies widely, making a joint network an excellent platform for knowledge transfer.

Engineering, processes and real-space imaging
Neutron scattering is excellent in performing non-destructive in-depth imaging of materials and components. Diffraction provides an excellent tool for determining grains, texture, composition and microscopic strain. Scattering is used to investigate complex flow, phase separations, sintering, welding and other engineering processes. Imaging is currently underrepresented relative to its potential, and is arguably one of the areas where the NNSP will have the largest impact on capacity-building for utilising the ESS.

In the field of hard thin films, there is currently a lot of activity in Norway and Sweden, e.g. within graphene, chemical vapour deposition (CVD) of hard coatings, advanced films for sensor applications as well as super-lattices. In this field, there is great potential for Nordic added value by including the less active Nordic countries in a scientific network to stimulate this research area.

Network for Young Nordic Neutron Scatterers (NYNNeS)
Is a network representing the next generation of neutron research leaders in the Nordic/Baltic region. The vision is to enable young, active neutron scientists to establish and grow new groups. The main objective of NYNNeS is to be a strategic network in the lead-up to ESS, to increase competence within the Nordic/Baltic region. This will be achieved by facilitating career path opportunities by enhancing awareness and promoting stronger overall Nordic/Baltic collaboration on the implementation and development of neutron scattering. This will expand the user base and prevent the loss of specialised competence in the Nordic countries.
