There is growing political recognition across the Nordic region and internationally of the urgent need to address vulnerabilities in pharmaceutical preparedness. Despite this, critical knowledge gaps remain in the Nordic region — particularly regarding the effectiveness, cost-effectiveness, and societal value of pharmaceutical preparedness strategies.
The primary objective of MedPREP is to identify and evaluate the societal value of medical preparedness strategies in the Nordic countries.
Secondary objectives include:
- Mapping national preparedness and supply security frameworks for health services - collaboration with key stakeholders (WP1)
- Estimate the consequences of medical supply shortages on patient care, healthcare utilization, and health outcomes (WP2)
- To estimate the economic costs (budget impact) of alternative preparedness strategies to facilitate a supply of critical care pharmaceuticals in the event of a prolonged social-security crisis, as well as to model morbidity and mortality consequences of critical care pharmaceutical shortages (WP3)
- To elicit citizens’ valuations of reducing the risk of drug shortage using stated preference methods, and to inform on which factors drive valuations (WP4)
The project will be carried out by a multidisciplinary team of health economists and public health researchers from Norway, Sweden, and Denmark, working closely with professionals in public administration and emergency preparedness. Together, they will combine empirical analysis, stakeholder input, and cross-country comparison to develop policy-relevant knowledge and practical recommendations for improving pharmaceutical preparedness in the Nordic region.
