The overall objective of the NordForsk call for Nordic Research Infrastructure Hubs is to strengthen international competitiveness and facilitate the development of world-leading Nordic research infrastructure environments. The initiative will allow Nordic universities, university colleges and universities of applied sciences to use Nordic cross-border cooperation as a tool for achieving their own strategic objectives, thereby building long-term institutional capacity.
Each Nordic RI hub will strengthen Nordic cooperation on a specific, large-scale research infrastructure project with the aim of building and expanding Nordic competence within its area.
NordForsk has now decided to fund seven proposals for Nordic RI hubs with up to NOK 2.5 million each. In addition to the NordForsk funding, each hub is co-funded with at least twice as much by the national institutions.
“The high number of submitted proposals highlights the need for strengthening cooperation on research infrastructures at the Nordic level” explains Riitta Maijala, Chair of the Nordic Research Infrastructure Cooperation Committee, Vice-Chair of the NordForsk board and Vice-president for the Academy of Finland. “The high quality of proposals made competition tough but also highlights a demand for this type of funding, she continues”.
The seven Research Infrastructure Hubs awarded funding are:
- Nordic EMBL Partnership Hub for Molecular Medicine

Project leader: Hans Kjeldsen, Aarhus University - Nordic EPOS - A FAIR Nordic EPOS Data Hub
Project leader: Annakaisa Korja, University of Helsinki - Nordic MEG Hub: Collaboration of all Nordic magnetoencephalography infrastructures on education, management and dissemination
Project leader: Tiina Parviainen, University of Jyväskylä - Bridging Nordic Microscopy Infrastructures, BNMI
Project leader: Oddmund Bakke, University of Oslo - Nordic Research Infrastructure Hub on Cold Climate Engineering – COLDHUB
Project leader: Jukka Tuhkuri, Aalto University - Nordic hub on Advanced Transmission Electron Microscopy in the Physical Sciences
Project leader: Per Persson, Linköping University
Each hub includes cooperating institutions from minimum three Nordic countries.
