We aim to enhance biobanking operations and foster high-quality biomedical and epidemiological research by improving access to high-quality biological samples and health data and focusing on increased collaboration and innovation.
The NBN brings together leading biobank infrastructures from Denmark, the Faroe Islands, Iceland, Finland, Norway, Sweden. Biobanks are organized collections of biological samples, such as blood or tissue, linked to health information. They are essential for understanding diseases, developing new treatments, and advancing precision medicine. The Nordic countries have a long history of biobanking and are internationally recognized for their high standards, comprehensive health registries, and strong public trust in research.
The NBN RI hub will in our activities make it easier for researchers to access and use biobank resources across borders, supporting large-scale studies that can lead to better healthcare outcomes. A key part of this effort is expanding the Finnish Fingenious® platform into a Nordic-wide service, offering a single point of access to biobank data and samples. The project also focuses on knowledge sharing and capacity building. Through regular workshops, conferences, and training, NBN will support researchers and promote best practices in biobanking, including automation, data management, and sustainability. Special attention is given to ethical, legal, and societal issues (ELSI), ensuring that research is inclusive, and respectful of participants’ rights. NBN will also help translate research into real-world benefits by encouraging collaboration with industry and supporting innovation in biomedical and epidemiological research. All partners will be involved in the different activities. By aligning with European research infrastructures and planning for our sustainability, the network aims to remain a cornerstone of Nordic health research.
In summary, the NBN will increase utilization of biobanks and data collections across Nordic countries and create added value through optimized use of technologies, resources, and services. Ultimately, NBN will enhance scientific excellence, responsible research, and deliver lasting value to both the research community and society across the Nordic region.
