Sustainable Urban Development and Smart Cities

The Nordic Programme on Sustainable Urban Development and Smart Cities will produce useful knowledge and smart solutions for the future policy development in the Nordic countries.

Objectives

The Nordic Programme on Sustainable Urban Development and Smart Cities will produce useful knowledge and smart solutions for the future policy development in the Nordic countries.

The programme will provide an opportunity to gather all relevant Nordic actors within the research field of urban development and link across borders. The initiative will further strengthen the Nordic collaborations across R&D institutions, city and municipal administrations and private and public-sector actors.

Background

Urbanisation is one of the strongest megatrends in the world. Cities are important for economic development and growth, new knowledge, creativity, and innovation, and must lay a foundation for a generally good quality of life. A higher concentration of people creates social, economic and environmental challenges that must be solved; cities must be sustainable. Finding long-term solutions to urban problems will require cooperation across all sectors of society and areas of expertise, as well as collaborative research and innovation activities. Nordic research communities are showing an increasing interest in research on sustainable urban development and smart city solutions, and there is a growing demand for systematic knowledge from policymakers and other stakeholders.

The Nordic Programme on Urban Development and Smart Cities will contribute to Nordic added value and stimulate comparative research and exchange of best practice. The Nordic countries have similar governance structures, social and political institutions, and regional structures. At the same time, there are significant differences between the countries and between different Nordic cities, and this provides a unique foundation for comparative research in the Nordic region.
