The Junior Researcher Network in Brain-Integrated Neuromorphic Technologies for Biomedical Applications

The human brain is a complex and powerful organ, constantly sending electrical signals that control everything from how we move to how we feel pain. Understanding these brain signals has long been a goal of scientists and doctors, particularly for improving treatment for neurological disorders such as epilepsy, chronic pain, or movement impairments. But what if we could go one step further, not only reading signals from the brain, but also using them to trigger real-time actions, such as controlling a prosthetic device?

This is the bold vision behind BNBNet, a new Nordic research network that brings together scientists from Sweden, Norway, and Denmark. Our focus is on developing brain-integrated neuromorphic technologies: smart, energy-efficient systems inspired by how the brain itself processes information. These systems are designed to detect, interpret, and respond to brain activity in real time. One example might be a system could help decode the brain’s motor commands to operate assistive devices, such as a robotic arm.

BNBNet is unique not only for its cutting-edge scientific ambition, but also for its focus on training the next generation of researchers. Early-career scientists in neuroscience, electronics, materials science, and biomedical engineering will collaborate closely through workshops, exchanges, and joint research activities. By working across disciplines and national borders, we aim to build long-lasting expertise in this emerging field and strengthen the Nordic region’s leadership in ethical and innovative neurotechnology.

The impact of BNBNet could be transformative. Our work supports a future in which healthcare becomes more personalized, responsive, and integrated with the body’s own systems. It opens up new possibilities for managing neurological disorders, enhancing rehabilitation, and improving quality of life. At the same time, our network promotes open communication, gender balance, and responsible research, ensuring that these powerful technologies are developed for the benefit of all.
