Nordic convergent evolution network

Convergent evolution, when different lineages independently develop similar adaptations, offers unique insight into whether evolution is repeatable. This is a highly relevant question: if we can understand recurring patterns in evolutionary processes, we may also be able to predict how organisms will respond to changing environments in the future. Addressing these questions requires an interdisciplinary approach, spanning genomes to phenotypes and from fossil records to real-time experiments.

In the Nordic region, expertise in this field is scattered across countries and disciplines, with limited interaction between groups. We propose the Nordic Convergent Evolution Network (NCEN), the first formal platform uniting early-career researchers from Denmark, Finland, Norway, and Sweden around this central theme. Building on shared ecological settings, complementary expertise, diverse model systems, and a tradition of openness and collaboration, NCEN will create critical mass and scientific capacity in convergent evolution.

Starting in 2026, NCEN will deliver an comprehensive programme of activities: an in-person kick-off meeting, bimonthly digital seminars, funded research visits, collaborative publications, and a final open conference. Outputs will include joint scientific papers and grant proposals, educational materials for Nordic schools, and a public exhibition at the Natural History Museum in Oslo.

Our goal is for NCEN to enhance scientific creativity and impact in the field while positioning Nordic researchers for international leadership and success in competitive EU funding. Together, we aim to increase the visibility of Nordic research, engage the public in key evolutionary concepts, and build a lasting foundation for collaboration beyond this funding period.
